You would have to give 1,000 officers a $50,000 raise. That’s $50 million per year. The budget for NOLA is about $750 million if Google is to be believed. So this would be only about a 8% increase. Seems possible to me, and I think it would help a lot.
To work, however, this would require big concessions from the police unions that would allow more transparency and accountability. Again, it seems possible considering the amount of money involved.
One thing is certain, this is a problem that will have to be solved mostly by democrats since they control the large urban police forces.
