you hear the phrase "White Supremacist" all the time for the past couple years, but it is a very recent development.
I think this is why:
1) Calling everyone racist has lost its bite. They call everyone a racist for anything so who the hell cares anymore. boy who cried wolf and all...
2) Somebody focus grouped replacements for "racist" and found "white Supremacists" had the scariest sound, since that means KKK and Aryan Nation type people. So now they call everything "White Supremacist".
3) When people call you a racist, you can usually point out how they are in fact the ones being racist. But you can't very well turn it around and point out how they are being a "White Supremacists".
