Like the last coco said lake houston is good but muddies up easily. Lake conroe isnt bad either I just dont fish it often enough to give any advice. Sheldon has some quality fish and is close. Always packed with people in yaks and boats. Boat launch is on the southwest end. Yaks can launch there also or on the north end by the bank fishermen. I have had a few great days out there but been skunked alot also. Of course I fish saltwater more than fresh also

If you already have the yak then there are quite a few places within reasonable distance:
Lake Houston
Lake Woodlands
Lake Conroe (north end)

A bit of a drive but supposed to be amazing is the Toledo Bend Reservoir.
