you aren't of the opinion that the Russia investigation/hoax was going to happen with the same amount of voraciousness with or without the Holt interview?
Trump in that interview contradicted his own staff who said the President fired Comey based on the recommendation of Rosenstein and Sessions and said he was always going to fire Comey regardless of the recommendation and said it was because of Russia.
And he just left it at that.
Just that.

IMO if that weren't used as an excuse it would have been something else, with the quickness.
Well, we’ll never know after that ill advised stunt.

Well there were numerous other mostly now-proven illegitimate reasons/excuses/bases for the investigation, as we now know.
But as for the Holt interview, specifically, I still say the negative fallout from that was mostly made so by manipulation and referencing things out of context by Dems and media. Trump's main error there was not expounding just a little more, but it's also quite possible that he couldn't much do so at the time for classification reasons.
I guess I would agree that he walked into that on his own, but even just a relatively small amount of self research on the part of the average person at home would have given a clearer picture of what Trump's qualms with Comey were. And they certainly weren't unfounded.
