He's considered a fool among fools even with his clown co-workers.

It's not just mental illness, he's never portrayed as smart...just a mentally ill person with mild retardation. I think the movie fricked up. Showing that he was mentally ill was fine but they had to sprinkle in something to show he was super-smart beyond some laughing Tourette's guy with retardation and a gun vigillante.


Actually a really good point. There was nothing in that movie that made me think this guy was a future criminal mastermind. Even more support for the argument they just made him Joker to have a tie-in to the Batman universe and make it somewhat more interesting.

On top of this, there was nothing deep about the movie at all to me. It takes a guy with existing mental health problems and he's put over the edge by an utterly ridiculous society in which absolutely everyone are assholes right from the start. Nothing about his transition to Joker was particularly compelling to me.
