U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday endorsed the congressional campaign of Nabilah Islam, giving her the support of one of the best-known liberal politicians in the country as she races for the Democratic nomination for the Gwinnett-based seat.

The New York Democrat, a rising star in her party who has fast become a polarizing national figure, said she was drawn to Islam’s campaign because her “working-class background provides her with unique insight into what Americans go through on a regular basis.”“Nabilah is not afraid to fight against the status quo,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who endorsed Islam through her Courage to Change PAC. “We need more voices like Nabilah’s in Congress.”

Islam, a first-time candidate, hopes the endorsement gives her bid for Georgia’s 7th District a jolt as she tries to energize voters in a messy June 9 primary that’s further complicated by the coronavirus pandemic.
