Yeah, people who say JJ "set it up perfectly" are idiots. It was the same old hackneyed crap he always feeds us. The dude is not capable of original, creative thought. Franchise names are his meal ticket.
I felt that way about TPM, too. Incredibly pumped going in, yay we finally get a new one in the theater. And enough action to keep you distracted awhile, and the immersive John Williams score reminding you IT'S STAR WARS!
And then, the shine wears off, and you think- wow, that really was pretty weak, considering all the possible stories we could have got. And in this case, the sequel trilogy is the greater offender, because it eliminates a ton of potential ongoing storylines-
No renewed Republic led by our original heroes. No fitting, noble conclusions to their arcs- all die in relative failure and obscurity, their goals unaccomplished. Han is killed by his own son. Luke dies in isolation, after spending years in bitter rejection of the Jedi way. Leia, who started out as a princess, dies on a remote uncivilized campground, after apparently spending decades without even living on a planet with running water and an organized power grid.
And everything they fought for was wiped out, the only thing that stopped Palpatine was Palpatine's rebellious bloodline. Anakin, Yoda, Obiwan, Luke... irrelevant in the long run.
That isn't the direction I saw the OT going, and it's not what I wanted, either before or after seeing it.
