You need to make sure that their gear is rated for saltwater. Surf fishing will destroy your gear if your reels aren’t sealed and you don’t take care of them after fishing (thorough cleaning). I’m assuming you are wading into the surf. If fishing from the beach the maintenance will still be needed but less extreme.
I’ve always fished with spoons or basic swim baits in the surf (often a double rig). Most often caught Hardtails and Lady Fish. The lady fish are fun because they jump a ton and they school. Two of them on at the same time feels like a monster but tough to land because they both jump constantly.
