I think that is called imprinting. Ducklings will recognize the first object it comes in contact with as it's parent. Obviously that is the hen that hatched them in most cases but sometimes the hen gets distracted and humans, dogs, or other critters become parents by default. This duck will probably always be a tame bird immune to humans but will eventually grow up and do more duck things than sitting outside all day.

It has imprinted on me and my wife. The kids, not so much.

We hope he will fly away when he's old enough to take to the skies. Is there a way to tag a duck? I'm guessing it's something that would go around a leg.
