Help/Recommendation for a shade tree in back yard

I currently have this Schummard Oak. It’s kinda skimpy so far, but I have been debating pulling the plug on it and planting something with more of a shade canopy. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I’ve thought about live oak, and drake elm.
The yard is 90 feet across. Also, the wooden fence/black fence corner is the west. So sun setting in that direction would provide excellent shade all across the back yard if I had a big shade canopy here.

I’m by no means an expert, but live oaks are going to take a while to grow. Sawtooth and pin oak grow a lot faster but i don’t think i would want all the acorns in my yard. I would probably look at a red maple.
If you plan on living there for quite a long time, then in the long run the live oak would be better and have better value when you sell the house.

Live oaks grow fast for 20 years then are real slow. Drake elms put out too much leaf litter and die unexpectedly. Live oak is the only tree which will add value to your house.

I am willing to pay for as large as a live oak as I can find locally.

Only thing limiting what you can get is money and access. Got enough room to get a truck back there? I got a 6" caliper live oak set in my new back yard 2 years ago and it is paying off great now. Instant 25 foot tall tree and tons of shade in the afternoon.

When I say a truck, I mean a dump truck size truck. Dont know where you are located, but this one came from Ducotes tree farm out near New Roads, LA. Kurt is a good dude and has a MASSIVE spread out there to choose from. I think i remember him saying over 100 acres of trees. Container trees, field grown, tons of species.
This one was a field grown 6" caliper and I paid either 1600 or 1700. Cant remember for sure. He was in and out within an hour from the time he showed up. He said ones of this size are about 10 years old. I have had it in the ground for 2 years and I can already see solid growth from it. Worth every penny I paid.

Gotcha. It was an expensive purchase, but it got me a 10 year head start and is the center point for my backyard. My recommendation would be to buy as much tree as you can.

How long ago did you plant that Shumard oak? I’m no expert on oaks but I had a forester friend tell me that oaks don’t have a great deal of top growth for the first 3 years compared to many tree species as they establish their root system but after year 3 they begin growing pretty fast.
Though I don’t have any oaks in my yard, neighbors do - cherry bark, Shumard, Nutall and Willow - that were planted as young 3 inch caliper trees - and that that seemed to be case with their trees, very slow growth for the first few years, but they are now 20 years old and beautiful 50 to 70 ft tall shade trees. I wouldn’t give up on the Shumard if it’s still young - that is a nice landscape oak for a yard.

I wanted shade trees when I built my house. I ended up planting a Bradford pear and 2 live oaks. The live oaks will grow fast the first 10 years then slow down. I have been very pleased with the speed of growth.

The Schumard was in the ground for a year but it was on the fence line. After 1 year, we decided to put a fence so I moved it last January (2019) to where it currently is.
So it’s been in its current spot 13 months.

Well I’ll let you decide - this is my neighbors cherry bark oak (maybe 22 years old, and not much bigger than yours when planted), I’m estimating about 50+ feet tall, and Shumard’s are almost identical to cherry barks. You want to train it as a central leader tree when young (like a pine) but it will grow to look like this. Actually the oak tree to the right of this one, you can see part of the left side of it, is a Shumard. You can tell the difference from the leaf. If I had to guess I think this tree may have been 2/3 rds this size 10 years ago.
