Rome on HBO could have been the GOAT

Just finished re watching it for the first time in years. I remember the budget being very high and apparently the set burned down or something so they had to condense the show. Really is a shame would have loved at least 4 seasons. The acting is some of the best of any show in my opinion and it really has aged well over time. James Purefoy and Cirian Hinds were fantastic.

I think the showrunners originally wanted four seasons but, as you said, the expenses combined with the fire were what caused the suits to opt for a truncated story.

There was enough of the set left to film Thermae Romae (highly recommend if you want a wtf watch)

Vorenus and Pullo are the best buddy team of all time.

Wasn't John Millis a writer on the show?
If I remember right, he had essentially been black balled as a major director and was needing money to put his kid through law school, so, the story in the doc goes, that he called up the show creator and asked to be just a regular staff writer on the show.
The guy was basically flabbergasted, and said, 'uh yeah, the guy who wrote Apocalypse Now' can have a spot in my writers room.

Yeah it was a great show. The opening battle scene showing the Roman clockwork like coordination and formation (until drunk Pullo decides to do some one on one) is one of favorite battle scenes ever.
At least HBO learned from not supporting that one long term and it paid off for them with Game of Thrones and others.

Rome was fantastic, wish it could have continued. But still one of my favorite HBO shows.
Knowing ATT is in charge of HBO now, they will probably try to reboot all the old shows and ruin them for good.
