Never got in to the Dead
Then I started really listening to various playlists from Amazon music as I was working in the yard and that has sent me into a month long trip into the rabbit hole know as the Grateful Dead.
John Mayer joining up with Dead and Company certainly brought the scene back to life to those uninitiated from the origins.
Also being a guitar player myself with all this free time has given untold amount of joy trying to play the songs which are very "unconventional" to play.
At the end of the day it is the songs that make them so special.

quote:A friend of mine just had the same experience from that same documentary. "A long strange trip" was really good and explained the "movement." The song choices and placement were perfect throughout. Also, it showed how they were/are all really good musicians who pushed each other both on and off stage throughout their career.

I happened to be inside the phish "movement" during the mid 90s right after Jerry died. Very surreal at times. It's also hard to describe their music back then, because it was so different from everything else at the time.
You should go check out Furthur or Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD).
