Need a new sub for the living room. Its a typical new construction open concept. I had an old cheap JBL 12" ported sub that worked ok nothing special. It just died this week.

Looking at:

Monolith 12" Monoprice

Klipsch R-115 15"

or a Polk HTS 12" (cheap options)

Anythoughts on these options. It seems that the monolith is the best rated/spec. in that price range. Slightly better than an svs pb-2000 and $100 cheaper.

At that price range, the Monolith seems to be the class.

I'm big on SVS myself, while the PB-2000 is close, on paper it does not really match up. However, they have excellent customer service if you decide to go down that road. Too bad the 3000 is so expensive.

Also take a look at the HSU VTF-3 MK5.I have no personal experience with them, but I know they are frequently mentioned.

Interesting, its a 15" and on sale for a hair more with shipping than the Monolith. It would probably make more sense to get the 15" due to the size of the room.

Save up for a few months and buy a bigger sub. You won't regret going bigger.

I think either of these will work 10xs better than that old JBL I had. The thing just never died for me to upgrade - now it has.

It’s for mixed use in a family room / living room which is near the kids bedrooms so I don’t need it to be that crazy I just want a good value / sound good

I would definitely stay away from the Polk, I bought several subs for my living room a while back and the Polk is the only one that went out so far.
Unless you want to save up and get something extremely nice I would recommend these two. I'd say they both perform about the same and they can rock.

Bigger does NOT mean better. Bigger often can lead to flabby, tubby, one note bass if it's a poor design.

That’s what I’m reading is thE monolith would be cleaner and the hsu would be a bit louder/rangier but may have a little port noise

Depends on how you set it up. The hsu vtf3 is a damn good sub and I would doubt you would get port noise if you set it up properly. I run 2 hsu vtf 15h.

What's it for?

Music -or- Home Theater

It'll make a difference in how far down you want it to go. For music something like 29 Hz will get you lows from from typical musical instruments. However for earth shattering video you'll need to go much lower.

I have their VTF-15H MK2 which was a generation before and for it's been great. Got it from a pseudo-friend (acquaintance) who was upgrading to the one your looking at, so I'm sure it's probably even better. Word of warning it's like an end table in size.

If you’re doing a balance you want a fast sub for music. Honestly one of the SVS subs if you can fit it in your budget would do the best overall job.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.

SVS makes some of the best subs out there, regardless of price.

I went with the HSU it’s big but it seems to be really flexible with the tuning which I like and should fill my space when I want to crank it or watch a movie or music.

I almost got the new SVS PB 2000 pro which has an app/Bluetooth enabled

I just remodeled our kitchen and living room and built a box in the side of my new fireplace for THIS SUB. Elura tri 10.
Its WAY more than I'll ever need and my home theater is pretty darn impressive

Eta: my space is somewhat bigger than yours, but not by much and both rooms are now open to each other.
