I'd be in favor of stepping stones or pavers more than a gravel path.
Can't walk on gravel barefooted and, if this pertains to you, dogs don't particularly like walking on gravel, either.

It’s said that #8 limestone and DG are considered barefoot tolerable surfaces. DG can be pricey and it takes the right type of sub base prep. You could always put concrete stones set in #8 limestone. Done that a lot in my designs.
