The NCAA should do right by the athletes.

There question of how to handle eligibility of the spring sport athletes, some of who will miss a large portion of their seasons.
If the NCAA wants to truly do what's best for the athletes they should handle eligibility for all spring athletes in a way that benefits them.
I think every athlete should have the option to return next season, in their same classification (like this would have been a redshirt year, regardless of if they used one already or not). All athletes that would have been draft eligible at the end of the season should still remain draft eligible.
Some examples specific to LSU would include...
Cole Henry - draft eligible sophomore in baseball. He should be able to enter the MLB draft if he wishes, or return to LSU next season and be a sophomore again.
Skylar Mays - was in his senior season. The door should be open for him to return for another senior season if he would choose to do so.
I think this is the only way to do right by the athletes, who may have had their season ripped from them. Juniors in baseball may no longer have the opportunity to raise draft stocks. That is a huge deal in the MLB draft, if they have to return for their senior season. They will lose a lot of money.
Then there is the seniors, mainly basketball ones, who some were set for a tournament run. That's now probably taken away from them.
I hope they don't just turn the calendar on the year. That would not be beneficial to the college athletes anywhere.

I disagree about basketball. They played a full regular season.

Don't expect them to do anything right by for the athletes based on what they've done so far.

They played a full regular season. The conference tournaments and post season were taken away from them. I know they got the vast majority of basketball played, but a decision will have to be made. Why makes the decision that will not benefit the student athlete?
It's not like the players would be forced to return. The options should be there though, in my opinion.

What do you think that has been done so far was not in the best interest of the athletes?

I mean it sucks but I’m pretty sure Skylar is ready to move on with his life.

What they need to do is play the NCAAT in May/June

That's perfectly understandable, and fine. There are probably hundreds in Mays situation though, and some of them may want to have a chance to finish what they started.

Based on the data we have the athletes are amount the group that is the safest with the virus. A simple 1-2 week postponement and reassessment after a week would have been perfect. They just took away 3 months of these kids livelihood.

I think you are missing the whole point of canceling things. I certainly sucks, but I believe it was absolutely the correct call. That's not what this thread is about though.

I hope they do, but you it isn't as simple as just saying, "Hey everybody. Tip off is in May."
#1- you don't know the state of the virus at that point.
#2 - you need to secure locations to have the games.
#3 - what are the athletes doing from now until then? Do they continue practicing? Are some of them sick? Do some graduate and move on?
It's not as easy as just saying, we will play the games.

Count me in on the extra year for basketball. Maybe Skylar would decide he’s ready to move on, but there may be another kid in the SEC who knows he doesn’t have a future in the NBA and wants one more opportunity to play post season basketball. Leave it up to the kids.

Is there another alternative, besides just turning the calendar over and moving forward? That doesn't seem like the right way to go, if the goal of the NCAA is to help the college athletes.
I just used Mays as an example, but there are plenty more. Just on LSU, you have Marlon Taylor, who is probably a much better example. He has some skills that are NBA level. He has other skills that are not NBA level. His season was already cut short with the injury. Maybe he was about ready to totally break through during these next 2-10 games LSU had and give himself a nice opportunity past college. That opportunity is maybe gone now.

They need to do right by them and realize that this was nothing more than a knee jerk reaction and let the athletes play.

Don’t get me wrong, postponing games or games with no fans was the right call, but canceling out for 3 months and canceling seasons was knee jerk.

They would have to jump through some different hoops. Like scholarship limits. LSU is signing a large b-ball class with knowing of losing Taylor and mays. How does that work. All sports would have the same issue

No scholarship limits for the next few years.
If you’re going to take unprecedented steps, be prepared to make unprecedented repairs.

That is what they will have to do. Maybe need only 1 year.

So a senior baseball player like Matt Beck who isn't on full scholarship because baseball only has 11.7 to break up among 27 players. If he comes back, he would have to enroll in grad school to be eligible for a fifth year, who is paying that tuition?
Also, you have to increase scholarship limits for all sports, because you have incoming signing classes.

Hahaha that isn't happening.
Basketball and football blue bloods will take hella advantage of that rule.
