China wasn't full blown Commie yet. They were in the midst of a civil war when Japan attacked in the 30s and the two sides joined together to fight the Japs.

They mostly still just fought each other while avoiding the Japanese whenever possible. Joseph Stilwell was the US general in command of China-Burma-India and he had very little respect for Chiang Kai Shek. Chiang and his generals stole everything in sight and his army was essentially useless. The Communists were more disciplined but they played the long game waiting out the end of the war so they could take over the country.

And, prior to WWII, the nationalists were beating Mao and the Communists back. It wasn't until WWII and thereafter that Mao got the upper hand.
