Reggie Fils-Aimé, the recently retired president of Nintendo of America, will join GameStop’s board of directors on April 20. The announcement was made Monday in a news release on the publicly traded company’s website. The news comes in the middle of a precipitous decline in the company’s stock price, and rumors of turmoil inside the troubled games retailer.

Feels like when you give the retired Hall of Famer a huge contract to save your dying franchise

I mean, there is an easy dream of serving on a bunch of boards when I retire early.
Kudos to Reggie, but Gamestop is a sinking ship.

They will just rename the place and make it more of like a Nintendo attraction.
GameStop used to be called EB games and before that Electronic Boutique, good ol days.

I remember buying the original FFVII at electronics boutique. It’s currently still open as a GameStop.

I’m sure that GameStop will be absorbed by another large retailer. Actually stopped in a GameStop today and picked up some Roblox gift cards.

Why does everyone think this guy is a genius? It's not like he ran Nintendo and pulled it out of a dumpster. All he did was run the American subsidiary of a gaming company that has so much cash in reserves, they can launch turd after turd for a few years and still not be in the hole.

No one thinks he is a "genius". That has never been said to my knowledge.
He is just a likeable goofball.
Reggie handled PR great for NA. He does have soom value.

holy shite i had no idea thats what became of them.
takes me back to the good old days, swinging by electronic's boutique to pick up a disappointing n64 game like Body Harvest, Hybrid Heaven, or Quest 64, down to get a slice of Sbarro, then over to Suncoast to lust over the Dragonball box set dvds.

GameStop represents the assimilation of all major decidated video game stores of the 1980's and 1990's.
Babbages
Software Etc.
FuncoLand
Electronics Boutique
They all consolidated over the years one by one and GameStop is the end result.

How’s PR gonna save a shitty company like Gamestop? For years they bought up and shut down better gaming store chains and constantly treated their customers like shite. They deserve to go under as a company.

I hope he's able to help turn it around.
I think the video game world is better with a store dedicated primarily to video games. There's something cool about being in a video game store with fellow gaming nerds and stuff. Having a space for your hobby or culture is just sort of nice. Going to the game store and buying a game was always a memorable, exciting experience for me as a kid. I can remember where I bought almost every physical game I own actually.
It's just kind of pathetic to think of physical video games reduced to being tiny sub sections relegated to Wal Mart and Best Buy and shite.
Nothing about a WalMart feels special, quite the opposite. You'll be picking up a game and buying some ketchup and socks at the same time.
It's like when Blockbuster died, it kind of was sad. Going to the video rental store and walking around and looking at all the movies, and seeing other people there doing the same, it made renting a movie this unique shared experience everyone in society had for the 20 or so years it was popular. I can remember going there with various girls I was dating, wandering around, looking for date night movies, even remember specific movies we picked out as we hashed out one we could both agree on.
Everything is way more efficient now, but the trade off is it's all very cold and impersonal and forgettable.

They spent all last year shopping for a buyer and no one wanted to buy them.

Listen, kid.
I never said it was a good idea.
Just that you shitting on him as if he has no value was dumb.
