I don't know about east of the Ms. but in CENLA, our garters look nothing like eastern garters identified by our posters from the other southern states. Ours are black, never brown, with lots of bright coloring.

That’s no dekay, it’s a garter. Compare its head’s size to the sweet gum ball. It’d be a world record dekay x 2. Also the mid dorsal stripe.

In Ga and SC they are usually a brownish green. At first glance I was thinking this was a Dekays but I am leaning towards garter now, especially with that dorsal stripe

I had a really pretty garter in the yard a week or so ago
