It's because he had a 7'3 wingspan and could jump really well for a 6'7 guy (38" max vert).
This notion you have to have some 7 foot center to be able to protect the rim is beyond old thinking.

I think Tyrus Thomas is definitely in that conversation. I thought he was more of a presence than Jordan Mickey.
