Friends,

Chili seems to be a food anyone can easily make at home. It doesn't take culinary skill to make, hence, its popularity in Texas. New Orleans has a very weak chili scene. Rather than an embarrassment, this is an accolade for the city, further proof that New Orleans is, along with New York, one of the two food capitals of America.

When New Orleanians want a hearty staple of meat, beans, and a carb, they usually turn to red beans and rice. More recently, we've seen more jambalaya dishes. But chili is an afterthought, which is why the best versions of it come from chains. Very few local New Orleans restaurants sell chili.

1. Houston's
2. Bud's Broiler
3. Tastee Donut, Kenner
4. Cafe Maspero
5. Golden Corral
6. Waffle House
7. Camellia Grill
8. Firehouse Subs
9. Parkway Bakery
10. Chili's

Harold Veazey's Texas BBQ, first on St. Claude, and then on Houma, behind the old Brooklyn's Pizza, was neck and neck with Houston's for best chili when it was open.

Yours,
TulaneLSU
