Covering 2nd base

Has anyone gone back to the 2 plays where we didn’t cover 2nd base and seen who was supposed to based on how the plays progressed?

Mathis on the bunt late in the game for sure.

Nobody can give you a clear, accurate answer.
Mathis was covering third on the bunt, Doughty was covering first. Beloso and Dugas charged.
I don't know if both were supposed to charge, but if one of them wasn't then it's on them. You don't see something like that play out very often at all. If they were both supposed to charge, then you almost have to run the CF to second to cover the base to stop that. Asking a lot of Mathis to get back to second. Best case is it's a foot race to the bag between Mathis and the runner.
It was just a heady play by the Nicholls kid.

The bunt was down the third base line so the third baseman is charging and Mathis is covering third. When the bunt goes down third base line the first baseman needs to peel back to cover first and the second baseman should go to second.
If this doesn’t happen someone should see second isn’t covered and should get there. Either Mathis leaving third or whichever of the right side didn’t cover first because the runner is going to overrun first then look to see who is covering second.

Me neither, which is why I can't just come out and flat out blame Mathis. Maybe they both were supposed to charge, and it was just coaches not properly preparing them for the situation. Probably 95 times out of the 100 you are getting that out right there. Still have to prepare for those 5 times, and we didn't.

Good point. Someone needs to stay home in that situation.

I bet we don't see it again

Bunt coverage issues like that one against a team playing their WS, throwing caution to the wind with suicide squeezes every other inning, doesn't bother me much.
Vietmeyer getting in a bind, then pitching himself out of it, with help from a manager that attempts a suicide squeeze with bases loaded and one out, only to have the catcher give up a passed ball...…
That bothers me

Actually if both corners crash. Second base is left unoccupied. That's usually on a sac with runners on first and second. I admit I didn't watch so I am just guessing. The batter is trying to make 3rd field it so SS has to cover 3rd. Coaches usually only call for both corners to crash when they want to try and get the lead runner. If that so not the play, they just go to first and concede the sac . But like i said, I didn't t see the play, so I a man just guessing the scenario

Basically 3 Bs of responsibility...
Ball Play the ball
Base No ball, cover a base
Back-up No ball, no base coverage, back-up the play
Pretty simple......

1000000% agree.

I wasn't watching, but if the bunt went to the left side of the field this is the correct answer.

It was Doughty, but I agree with the point.

I don't remember who fielded the bunt. Beloso was charging in like a raging bull though. No chance of him getting back to first. That's a lot of man having to travel about 60 feet. Wasn't happening. Like foot said, Doughty was late getting to first. So he maybe had to adjust on the fly because Beloso wasn't supposed to charge.

Was is a sac bunt or did the batter show late? From what I've read it doesn't sound like it was a sac.

, I could see Doughtys face, and his desperate attempt to get his right foot to the bag
When I first typed it I typed Dugas as a charger (from third) and the coverer (from second). Tuesday and Wednesday have me mixed up. I hope Mainieri sticks with that combo for a little while though. I liked it, but I don't know if he will.

Garza gets lazy with runners on base too much for my liking. I am hoping Milazzo can hit well enough to move Garza to DH. Milazzo did have two passed balls in a game this weekend but he is the better catcher of the two and it’s not close. Garza is serviceable back there but Milazzo is an extreme talent as a defensive catcher.
