LSU Basketball Perspective

There has been two big talking points on this board for the past couple of weeks, the lack of defense and the crowd.
I see people complaining about Will Wade saying he doesnt have anyone else to play, but its true. The lack of size is killing us. You ever wonder why teams shoot so well against us, its the lack of size. If you pay attention, we go under every screen. Its a decision that Will Wade has to make because we have no true big men to protect the paint, if our defender gets beat. Next, when our defenders do get beat literally everyone on the team crashes. We don't need two people contesting every shot, thats why we see so many wide open shots. This is the lack of discipline that Will Wade has been mentioning in his press confrences, so he can get some blame because of that. But again it comes due to lack of size.
Also, we have terrrible on ball defenders. Javonte has the slwoest feet I might have ever seen in a Point Guard. Watford as many has indicated is lazy off ball, but we have him gaurding opposing shooting gaurds, you cant expect hiuim to when those matchups. Emmitt Williams and Days put in effort, but against these good teams like Kentcuky, they are over matched with length on both ends.
Skylar, Manning, and occasionally Marlon Taylor are the only players that are capable of consistently staying in front of their man. These breakdowns lead to the probelms with lack of size and kickouts I was hinting at before.
The only way to fix these problems are with recruiting players to fit Will Wades style of play. This upcoming class you are seeing guys with length and athleticsim capable of gaurding mutliple positions (Josh Leblanc, Wilkinson, O'neal hopefully Eric Gaines) and potentially a true 6'10 Big Man in Frank Anselem.
Before the season we knew this team was limited, the hot start to conference play got us excited, but in the end you have to remember this is a limited team. If you would have asked two months ago 90% of people would love being 9-4 in conference play.
The next thing is saying the PMAC is dead and yes it sucks. But STFU and dont complain if you dont go to the games. Every game you see on TV where it seems like other schools fans seem so into it they are on the sidelines where you can actually see and make a difference. Last night the student section was on there feet making noise the whole game, they just have the worst seats in the house. Evenb for the Missouri game the students seemed more into it. Put them in the seats of all 40-60 year olds who will say back in my day the pmac was rocking, and I think you will get a more desirable environment. Give todays tstudents the same chance to get it rocking like y'all had.
Everyone compares the student section to football games. At football games the Band does a great Job of getting the crowd involved with chants or whatnot. At basketball games all they do is play fast paced songs. I dont know if this some kind of SEC rule or the Band directors decision, but it be nice if they would play some songs that get the crowd involved going into timeouts.
Short Version: This is a very limited team due to lack of size. and due to a number of factors LSU students/fans do not get a chance to be involved like other fanbases

The problem here is I think a lot of people see, that despite the personnel issues, they are close to being a good team, not great but good.
And its absolutely frustrating

That is a very good take. I like that that you got right to the point. Truthfully, its a better take than most of the sky screamers.

Do you realize that those students who go nuts at football games are in the lower corner of the endzone and can’t see shite for most of the game and have to see whats going on on the scoreboards. It has nothing to do with having the best seats

Arky has the smallest team or one of the smallest teams in all NCAA hoops, yet they lead the nation in 3 pt fg defense.

Makes sense, smaller and quicker guys can defend the perimeter better than taller and slower guys can.
How do they stack up on rebounding and overall D?

They're terrible at rebounding and when we played them we got just about whatever we wanted at the rim. They tried everything to stop it. I feel bad for Musselman this year. Arky's previous coach left then with zero size. I think their tallest player is like 6'6.

Alleva gutted the recruiting last year and this team is paying for it.
It’s not a bad year considering.

You cant compare a basketball arena and a 100,000 seat stadium. But I should have used better grammar, I was talking about where the TV viewer can see then students getting rowdy.

You are correct. Having a rim protector makes life so much easier on the defensive end for the other 4.

Arkansas leads the SEC in defensive efficiency and is 26th in the nation in that category. So yes, despite a lack of "size" you can be a good defensive team. Certainly having a big frontcourt would be nice. But it is NOT the necessity all the excuse makers try to make it out to be. Baylor has a 4 guard line up with one forward (6'9). They are the 3rd best defense. Penn St. doesn't have an incredibly tall front line, yet they are #17 in D efficiency.
I also think people forget this is only the first year LSU hasn't had a tall frontline, but not the first year they haven't been good defensively. In year one LSU had Reath/Epps (both 6'10). Last year LSU had Reid/KBW (both 6'10). However, the defensive efficiency ratings were 136 (12th in SEC) and 59 (8th in SEC) respectively.
CLEARLY just having a big frontline hasn't been enough. LSU's tremendous offensive ability has masked their defensive woes for three years. This year's defense is just the worst, but not the ONLY bad defense Wade has run out there.
We can sit here and talk about how this player has slow feet, or this player is lazy, or this player has no lateral quickness, etc, etc, etc. But after three years of the same issues I don't see how anyone can deny that the problem is the approach/philosophy of the coaching staff.

Yeah, that's what I keep reminding myself when they struggle... We lost most of our big name guys when the WW/Alleva saga went down.
Thankfully, Alleva no longer works here, so hopefully that shite is a thing of the past, because you know Woody ain't gonna cooperate with shite until something is proven
LSU has a fantastic recruiting class coming in, and I fully expect more guys to sign meaning we'll have some attrition from this roster in addition to the guys we will likely lose to the draft
