This is what cost him his reputation, ultimately. Was he doping, sure. Were the people he beat also doping, undoubtedly. Did he start the doping trend, not even close. Did he successfully avoid getting caught better than everyone else at the time, he did.

If he had laid off being a dick toward people who were telling the truth, he would be held in higher esteem than he is.


To paraphrase a note in the article linked below, after Armstrong was stripped (he actually never failed a test in his run if I recall correctly) no winner was named after Armstrong disqualified. Six of the seven overall runners-up to Armstrong (all except Joseba Beloki in 2002) have either admitted to or been found guilty of doping.
