Cell phone in Italy

Is it better to buy a sim card after we land or buy one here? Any recommendations on which one to use. We will be in Italy for 12 days and I would feel better if my kids had a working phone just in case they get lost.

You can use your regular phone there? With AT&T it's $10 a day and you only pay on days you use it.

It’s dollar or two more to use the $10 a day on your own carrier vs a SIM. Absolutely worth it. Verizon gives you a 1GB a day data limit which is a lot especially if you download google maps for the area. I don’t ever use public wifi but I’ve traveled with people who only use that method which works for them. Eff all that noise.
We tried tethering one phone to a phone with the international plan. The phone battery ran down incredibly fast so it’s not an option for all day but certainly works for a short time or if you’re pulled in.

Activate international plan with your provider. Only charges you per day that you use the phone.
Well worth it.

AT&T international day pass is well worth it.

So $10 x 12 days = $120. Does att charge for data on top of that? I always buy a Sim for about $5 that will last me 3 days. Most of the Sims you can top-up online for cheap so on a 3 week trip I may spend $30-40.

I’m done with stouts. Going to see if I can frick up some sours in a couple weeks.
I don’t think I’ve ever said I’m done with stouts. There’s always the possibility that I say something wrong though. I killed a bottle of ‘17 CBS last night.
The $10/day international plan allows you to use your phone as you normally do within your data limits.
Less than $1/day is very cheap. I’ve always calc’d my normal usage would be about $4-$6/day.

I'm with Google Pi which means I can use my phone in 140+ countries as normal.
frick AT&T as they told me their international plan would be great. Paid $100 for it and then when I got back I received a $800 bill with them saying I was over.

Depends what carrier you have. T-Mobile has the daily international plan for free with a few of its cell plans.
Verizon/AT&T have international for $10/day

Tmobile for the win. Went to Europe last year. Free data and texting. Hardly ever called. When we did i think it ended up being an extra 5-10 bucks on the monthly bill. Would mostly use wifi calling which is free.
