Yep, you guessed it. Even though there were four other teams that were supposedly rated higher than LSU's 2019 recriting class, that is not how they graded out.
Can't see the entire article - ESPN+ but enough to get the gist and a lot on Stingley Jr
PFF has unveiled its wins above average metric in recent weeks (PFF WAA), and we used it to rank the top 10 true freshman classes from the 2019 college football season.
1. LSU Tigers
Why they're ranked here: Joe Burrow got all the hype -- and rightfully so -- but the dominance of true freshman cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was a bit overlooked because of it. Stingley finished the season as the second-most valuable LSU Tiger in the team's title-winning run, and he ended up as the most valuable non-quarterback in the country. LSU, which is often referred to as "DBU," had another impact true freshman cornerback on the field in Cordale Flott, who was also stingy in coverage. On his 153 coverage snaps, Flott allowed just eight of 25 targets to be caught, and he produced five pass breakups.
How their top recruit fared:

DBU lives and continues to grow.
I think these guys will be too good to not get on the field.
And then you have the #1 CB in the nation that signed in December - Elias Ricks coming in.
4-star safety Jordan Toles.
And 3-star (247 rating) CB Dwight McGlothern
WEST SQUAD
Top Performers
2. Dwight McGlothern (25) - After announcing for LSU in the first quarter, the first declaration during the game, McGlothern then went out and showed why LSU made a late run for him, with two interceptions including a 38-yard pick-six of Evan Prater to put the game out of reach for the West. McGlothern also added a pass breakup and two tackles."

Good question. Sorry, but I don't have an answer. Maybe someone with a subscription can see the full article and possibly get an explanation.

This. Of all the non-QB players in the NCAA, Stingley was the most valuable.

He was easily the most valuable freshman last year regardless of position. The debate could be made that he was the most valuable non-QB regardless of age. It would either be Derek or Chase Young IMO.

How their top rated recruit fared was John Emery. Basically said he didn't see much time because of CEH, but was very elusive. Had a stat of .33 broken tackles per rush & .5 per catch.
Best true freshman was Derek Stingley. Called him most valuable non-QB player in terms on wins above average since PFF College was created in '14. Stingley forced tight coverage on 75.5% of his targets, which was the second-highest rate in the FBS. On those tight coverage targets, Stingley allowed just 20 catches from 71 total targets while intercepting six passes and forcing 20 incompletions.

Some people didn't even want to sign Flott, bc his ranking was 610 (composite).
I love hitting on 3 stars.

Imagine having Tre White, Tyrann Matthieu, and Patrick Peterson come through your program in the last 10 years and none of them are your best DB in that timespan.
That's how you know you're DBU.
