DE transfer candidates

Since we’re not getting Burch AND switching to a 4-3, we’ll need guys that we know can play DE and be ready to step into that role immediately. Our current DE pool is good but most of the guys are unproven (Cherry, McLendon, Anthony, Thornton, Moore, Fonua, Gaye, Little, Parker, maybe Thomas?) or still filling out (Webb/ Ojulari). Logan and Ferrell will be moving to DT. I think we should now target these 3 guys and hope for the best, if nothing else it will juice up the competition.

Farrell might well surprise you as a strong-side defensive end.
Remember, Tyson Jackson played that position for Pelini when he was last year. A guy 6-4, 295 like Ferrell is can play that spot.

I bet Gaye gets significant PT in his first year.
I think a lot of people are overlooking him.

I’m pretty sure O said in one of his interviews that it won’t exactly be a 4-3 right away, but they’ll eventually work their way to it when they get the personnel.

Just because a player is 280-290 now doesn’t mean he won’t be 260 by fall. The question is the height. Most defensive ends in 4-3 are tall. Glen Logan and Neil Farrell could probably play the end spot next season.

We have plenty of strongside defensive ends. We really didn't need Burch but anytime you have a shot at that kind of talent, you go far it.
Nonetheless, Justin Thomas, TK McClendon, Soni Fonua, Ali Gaye, and Jarrell Cherry are all strong side defensive ends.
Defensive tackles would be Tyler Shelvin, Glen Logan, Apu Ika, Neil Farrell, Jacobian Guillory, Jaquelin Roy, Joseph Evans, Nelson Jenkins, and Eric Taylor.
Weakside defensive ends are Andre Anthony, Ray Thorton, Ray Parker, Desmond Little, Phillip Webb, and B J Ojulari.

Tyson Jackson was a frekazoid. He had long arse arms and he also had the speed of a defensive end. By the way, I thought he was 6 feet 6 inches tall.
Neil Farrell is not as fast as Tyson Jackson was.

Nah, they are both defensive tackles. I'm guessing on the first rotation the two defensive tackles will be Glen Logan and Tyler Shelvin and on the second rotation will be Neil Ferrall and Apu Ika.

He said on 2-5-20 he wants to transfer to the 4-3 but did say last week that he wasn’t sure exactly when and if it would be immediately.

Ferrell can play DE and Logan on some snaps. I see

and look for maybe Webb if he can get to 250-260. I believe Webb and Ojulari will be our most aggressive pass rushers in 2020 as they are good. Second Line could be

4-3 weakside DEs and 3-4 outside linebackers are interchangeable.
Not to mention, by the time Webb becomes a starter, he'll probably be 250 pounds are more. However, he probably will be used in third-down speed packages before then. A lot like Marcel Brooks was used.
Now if they want to go with a heavier package, they can always get a strongside DE to play on the weakside as well.

Sure Ferrall can always play strongside defensive end, but he will be a slow one.

The rotation of players that will man the end spots on defense are already on campus and its that simple. The scheme will take a season or two to be totally installed and this upcoming season will see a simplified version of what Pelini wants to do. The roster has athletes at every level and this upcoming season will lean heavily on those elite guys just making plays. Line has a group of upperclassmen with a lot of playing time thus far and is going to be super deep. Secondary will be as hard as ever to throw on, but its the linebackers that should worry people. Who will be the ones that eat up all the tackles in the second level? Will Stevens play more as a safety or will he come down and be a true linebacker? Where do guys like Marcel Brooks, who had his moments end up playing...This is the real question mark for next year, not the line or if we would bring in outside help...

When O got him and didn’t process him when that whole thing was going on, that’s what it looked like. Someone with experience and talent who can step in right away while we develop the freshman who will be monsters in 2 years.

He said we signed six defensive linemen and we are going to switch to a 4-3 cause we have the players to do so and that he has always preferred that style of attacking defense more cause it is what he is used to.

I agree as we are quite thin at linebacker. Which is why I'm guessing Jacoby Stevens will be moved to the Will Linebacker position with Marcel Brooks being moved to the Strong Safety position.
I think Stevens will make an excellent Will Linebacker roaming the field to make plays and I can envision Brooks blitzing up the A & B gaps like Chad Jones used to do.
I'm going to guess that because of his size, Damone Clark will probably be the Middle Linebacker and Micah Baskerville will probably play the SAM Linebacker spot.
