Why is it always darkest when the boundary comes in, then it lightens up when the rain starts...?

I'm uptown looking out my lab, and saw the same, now it's much lighter with the rain.

I assume you're looking at the entire storm when it's approachong and only part of it when it's overhead.

Had a monsoon in Slidell but just clouds right now.
