Does anyone recall why LSU let Ed Reed get out of the state? Was he not highly ranked as a player? or was it just his personal decision to get out of the state?

We didnt keep much of the Ed Reed level talent home back in those days. Thats why you hear Kevin Faulk’s name a lot as one of our biggest recruits if all time.

The same reason LSU didn't get Reggie Wayne that same recruiting class (1997). Lot's of New Orleans area talent left the state at that time, many of them to Miami.

LSU wasn't the destination that it is today. It was in development from 1995-1999, and then fully under construction post-2000 until finally getting to its current stature.

Tons of elite recruits left La. in the 90's for Miami, FSU, Tennessee, Nebraska, Colorado. Now they don't and look at those same programs now.

Ed Reed was a QB at Destrehan and a damn good one. Many missed on him.

I don't believe honey fried chicken was invented yet when Warrick Dunn committed to FSU.

a few that I remember as LA was ripe for the pickin' during that era
Miami - Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne, Pat Riley, Carlos Jones, Brock Berlin
FSU - Warrick Dunn, Robert Hammond, Travis Minor
Tennessee - Harlan Davis
Nebraska - Mickey Joseph, Tyrone Hughes, Reggie Cooper,
Colorado - Cordell Stewart, Vance Joseph, Shannon Clavelle, Mike Phillips,
Michigan - Chris Howard, Bobby Powers,
Ohio State - Jonathon Wells
UCLA - Chad LaRose
SDSU - Marshall Faulk … big whiff by LSU who wanted him to be a DB

Warrick Dunn - given his tragic circumstances, I don't blame him for leaving BR.
Peyton and Eli purposely left off list as they were never gonna sign with LSU

Any reason why they never wanted to go to LSU?

Ed Reed

This is before my time but talking to a guy who covered recruiting for the past 30 years he said LSU was late to turn the heat up on him. By the time we went after him hard he already was set on going to Miami. He observed Reed at an LSU camp at some point and he said he looked uninterested even though he obviously looked really good at the camp.

Peyton and Eli’s grandfather hated LSU with a passion and Archie was/is Ole Miss royalty.

Curtis Johnson knew these kids and their families because he was from the St. Charles Parish, Destrehan, Edgard, areas. CJ was the WR coach at MIA and NOLA was his recruiting area. CJ is also responsible for getting Marshall Faulk to sign with SDSU

Yep, also because Curly and every other SEC school wanted him to play DB.
His position coach at SDSU was a guy named Sean Payton.

Craziest recruiting story ever.... great read on Jefferson
They had no idea what they were dealing with ... as soon as he got up there, they started to realize they had a monster on their hands
