Here is my suggestion. Quit classifying schools by enrollment. Classify them using number of athletes as a guide.
I think that would work for large schools, but it would create a challenge for small schools. You have to remember, large schools have kids try out for teams, cut kids, etc., so that when you’re talking about “number of athletes,” you’re actually talking about kids who made a team.
Many smaller schools have no cut policies, and more importantly, many smaller select schools believe that being part of an athletic team as an important part of the overall educational experience. So you’ve got coaches and athletic directors encouraging fairly non-athletic kids to join a team because of the character building lessons it will teach the kid. These are often kids who are not actually ever going to get playtime, but being a part of the team still benefits them immensely. It’s a hard sell for these schools to say that doing this is going to penalize them in terms of classification.

seems some selects are willing to kill this over 9th grade out of zone eligibility...... just have em go in 8th grade.....if it matters that much....
Still would not be eligible.
The new rule declares all 9th graders, regardless of how long they’ve been enrolled, are ineligible to compete at any level if they live out of attendance zone. And it’s not just select schools. This affects magnets and all public schools in Rapids, Orleans, and Caddo Parish because they don’t use attendance zones.
A kid that goes to a K-12 school his whole life is still ineligible his freshman year.
Its estimated that over 3000 students will lose eligibility under this rule.

I wrote the rule is exactly how it will be applied. That is directly from Eddie Bonine at Lafayette on Wednesday and BR and New Orleans on Thursday.
This had been discussed among principals and the LHSAA all this week.

Terrible rule. Let the kids play! Just group the schools in a manner that they are competing against schools with the same access to athletes (select/non-select). Decrease the # of divisions and competition levels will increase in the playoffs
Louisiana is always doing things backassward

Too watered down and it really has little effect on competitiveness outside of a handful of schools.

If the committee modifies this and lets 9th graders play freshman sports no matter where they come from and just make them ineligible for Varsity or JV, it will have a much better chance. With the way the attendance zones are gerrymandered a school like Catholic will have 80% of the kids within a 2mi radius of the school ineligible as freshmen. Heck you could live on Claycut, East of Acadian about 1/20th of a mile from CHS and would be ineligible there but eligible at Episcopal or Dunham because of the way Tara's is drawn.
Here is the link to the attendance zones if anyone is interested. Just click the green High School button. LINK

Sorry for the double post, not sure what my phone is doing! Is that actually how the rule is intended? I don’t understand that at all. I understand the idea behind new freshman, because they want to prevent recruiting and therefore want to make a kid think twice if he’s only choosing a school because of athletics. But punishing a kid who has been there all along? What if you lived in the attendance zone when you first started the school and then your parents moved? This makes no sense?

You have to remember, that only has an impact on large schools. Smaller schools don’t have enough high school athletes to have separate freshmen teams. Many smaller schools don’t even have separate JV teams in some sports.

The problem is the other 5% of the time, when private schools actively recruit kids. I’m talking about finding a kid at a middle school 45 minutes away, someone who never would have otherwise gone your high school, and offering them a full scholarship and other perks. That is the recruiting that has caused so many of these problems. The LHSAA needs to crack down on investigating kids like this, and when they see inappropriate recruiting that is obviously athletically-based, the kid shouldn’t be allowed to play sports at all. Sitting out a year doesn’t solve the problem.
This pretty much sums up Lafayette Christian Academy. They just start in elementary school now so it's not as obvious.

LCA actively recruits kids in middle schools all around the parish, but especially kids on the Northside. They’re rapidly losing non-athletes because they’ve filled so many faculty positions with coaches and their standards have plummeted. They want to be an athletic factory and they have no academic standards to speak of. I wish they would feel the wrath of some entity.

Completely agree. Very few people pick schools because of sports, and I think the answer is to focus on those few kids who do. I know it’s a lot of legwork, but I think with some investigation and allowing everyone to report infractions (not just official complaints from a school), it’s pretty easy to figure out when a kid has been illegally recruited because of a sport. Make that’s it kid sit out for his whole high school or switch schools. But don’t punish the other kids!! These rules are punishing kids who are doing nothing wrong, while several illegally recruited kids are sliding through because they’re not being reported.

They are doing an phenomenal job of covering their arse, because I really don't see how they haven't gotten busted yet.

It really comes down to North versus South Louisiana. North Louisiana principals’ perception of private schools in the South is that they are all Evangel.

So in the cases of smaller schools, would this rule essentially eliminate most of their teams all together since they need a certain percentage of freshmen to just field a team ?

Exactly. There needs to be a way where anyone can report, or there’s even an anonymous option. Schools complain but don’t want to alienate other schools by reporting them.

In many cases, yes.
