This was actually addressed in a recent 247 College Football Daily Podcast. They specifically mentioned the Bama Bump and talked about how a guy as good as Jefferson could end up as a 2 or 3 star.

They started about by strongly defending the star system based on NFL Draft stats. But that’s just the Draft. They didn’t go further into how they correlate with NFL success. They did admit that not seeing everyone for direct evals plays into some misses.

They blatantly admitted to using offers as a way to decide who to pay attention to. If you don’t have a ton of offers, they don’t bother with you. They said that and grades are why Jefferson slipped through the cracks. They also said the Bama Bump is real because they trust Saban as an evaluator. He isn’t the only one, but he is a big one. I just thought it was crazy that they fully admitted to doing this.

While I understand that about Saban, people pay these guys good money to do this work, not rely on coaches to do it for them. I think it’s weak to basically admit that they bump most Bama guys just because Nick Saban offered them and then just fall in line with their own coverage.

Excellent commentary.

Reality is you and I could do as well as they do. They admit it.

I have no problems with their offers logic. I have a gigantic problem with their grades issue. Psst, you are supposed to be rating a guy's ability to play football...not his competence in algebra. Rate the guy on football talent and let God sort out if he will become eligible. That is asinine on their part and sounds 100% like an EXCUSE!

This is probably true, but it’s a question of scale.

Let’s imagine two extremes:
Scenario 1: There are no recruiting services. No published ratings/rankings of players. In this case, the only way to sort through all of this would be for the average fan to look at film for thousands of high school players for themselves. The only indications of offer sheets or player interest levels would come from the players themselves. (Remember, college coaches aren’t allowed to speak publically about recruits before they sign.)

If this were the case, eventually somebody would see the clear market for this information and start compiling it. At their core, that’s all Rivals and 247 really are - aggregators.

Scenario #2: At the other extreme, imagine a service that actually developed detailed profiles by watching all 3,000+ division 1 prospects play in-person. It would be a monumental task and, quite honestly, probably not profitable.

So what we get is something in between with a lot of focus on top 300-ish players with impressive offer sheets, and not a lot of focus on the rest. It’s an imperfect system but it’s probably the best anyone can really hope for given the market.
