I cannot think of a single performance of his that impressed me.

Is this one of those “(insert notoriously praised actor/movie/show) really isn’t that great” threads? I love these

all you have to do is yell and all of a sudden you’re a critically acclaimed theatre actor

Yep. Cause that’s all he’s done....Yelled a bunch and taken home 3 best actor oscars. Al Pacino should have like 7 by now then

That’s because his character required subtlety and nuance, things which are not strong aspects of DDL’s repertoire.
Christian Bale, Tom Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal can all do it.
Can you imagine how many screaming soliloquies DDL would have done as Louis Bloom? His voice rising to a bellowing scourge with arms flailing.
Jake makes you feel everything you should about the character...menace, cunning, mystery, ambition, anticipation, motivation, depraved indifference...with a deft touch.

That's not overacting.
His character was going insane and as anger issues. I mean he wanted to kill that "preacher" the whole movie.

I see the character and not the actor with regards to Lewis. I can’t say that for most of Hollywood.
True for me as well.
