It seems like most of the people I know who enjoy something in space other than Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy only have experienced Mass Effect. They have never heard of masterpieces like BSG and B5.

What makes Mass Effect the most accessible sci fi universe?

It is a video game, which makes accessing the universe really easy.

Very good marketing and pretty strong gun-based gameplay with very familiar cover mechanics. It's not like Mass Effect was a mammoth seller, but it did very well in a time period before people watched so much streaming. So the only sci-fi game that most people talked about was Mass Effect.

Imagination-wise, it's not that unreasonable of a future.

The games take place in our galaxy with only a few different races. Travel and weaponry are both limited.

Star Wars and Guardians are both less attainable.

It is?

I wouldn't say those are hardcore scifi. Dark Empire(Legends/EU) is more SciFi than those franchises.

I don't enjoy Guardians or Mass Effect. Sorry.

This. The world building struck an incredible balance between realism and depth of fantasy.

There are so many more stories that could still be told in that universe. It baffles me that they threw scrubs at Andromeda and then all but abandoned the IP. With all the boring stories being told in games these days, I don't understand why more companies don't go back to the well of their older IP. Make a sequal/prequal; do a reboot; hell, pull an Ender's Shadow and create a parallel arc within your already existing story. It will likely be more interesting than the standard crap that is churned out, on average.

P.S. And before anyone whines, no, I'm not saying that there aren't great, story driven games still being made. I'm saying they are in the minority, so going back to some of these solid, well developed stories/universes would be a good thing.

How is this nowadays? I played about a quarter of it when it first came out and quit because I got caught in a game breaking bug.

This thread makes me want to go back and play it since it apparently got some updates.

I actually still haven't played it, but I do own it. From what I've read, it's actually a decent game at this point. Pale in comparison to the original trilogy, but worth playing.

I haven't upgraded my PC in years, and from what I gather it's not terribly well optimized, so I'm putting off playing it until I can overwhelm the suggested specs.

I haven't played it since I beat it shortly after it came out, but it's worth a playthrough. It was the buggiest game I've ever played, though.
