One of the most ridiculous concepts in unions is the seniority concept. Once you've been at the company for awhile, you will never get fired.
Yeah, none of that is true.

I deal with labor unions all the time in my law practice. As with other groups, there are good unions and bad unions.
A good union wants to be rid of the slackers and unsafe employees as much as the employer does.
The entertainment unions provide members with fantastic benefits. I have a friend who is a SAG member who would have succumbed to cancer years ago but for the fantastic health insurance coverage that SAG members have.

Some unions will put their Union interest above the interest of the employees they represent. I once represented a company that was going to close because the owner died. Another company offered to acquire the company but only if the union would agree to release the buyer from the Union contract. The union would not agree, the company did not sell, and 20 employees lost their jobs.
The Union could have agreed and petition for a new election as soon as the new buyer took over. But, the union had not been a particularly good representative of the employees and likely knew that they would not win a new election.

That’s true. The poster I was responding to thinks seniority means you can’t be fired though.

The people that benefit the most where I work are the useless fricks who would have normally been fired a long time ago at any other company.

legal coverage - the only reason. Its really expensive to hire your own lawyer if they mistreat you.

My views have typically been anti Union until I experienced deliberate manipulation by my Supervisor and Manager.
Thank God The Union provides a necessary platform as leverage to try to slow it down. Otherwise, wrong-doing would be justified by those with power to manipulate.
There is no doubt a right place for Union.

It is not in any company’s or manager’s best interest to terminate a good employee.
The reason you see bad Union employees retain their jobs is the arbitration process. It is very expensive and time consuming for the company. No matter how well the company prepares or how justified they were in terminating the employee, the outcome depends upon the arbitrator, who most often wants to split the baby so he doesn’t get a reputation of being pro or anti union.

This is a line of thinking that few union members have. First of all, there are very few absolutes in this world. Unions have their moments, but overall, they have out lived their use.
Seniority is a world that should never be used. It means nothing. Produce, or don’t produce. That is what matters.
Training....unions do not train more than all companies. They train individuals more than crappy companies. Good companies train employees. Even if it means losing them eventually (like my company).
I have seen the phrase - “annual raises” or “guaranteed raises” - used a number of times in this thread. IF the company is doing well, than go ahead and receive that raise. If the company has a bad year, why does anyone “deserve” a cost of living/annual/guaranteed raise?? You don’t.
Bottom line is the if you are good at you job, someone will pay you well. If you suck.....well you will get what you sow.

Has any OTers ever actually benefited from being a union member?
Yes. I wouldn't work in education without one. Especially with the insanely frivolous lawsuits that parents will try to file or the school districts who will try to throw you under the bus to cover their own asses. I was saved a lot of money in a suit a parent filed over her child having "severe neurological damage" due to a piece of pencil graphite that got stuck in the palm of his hand at the end of the school day. She filed suit because we didn't remove it (the district policy is you don't due to liability issues from another parent lawsuit). We attempted to contact her multiple times by phone but all of her numbers were either disconnected or went straight to voicemail. So we put a bandage over it, sent him home with a note to the parent, and put him on the bus. She filed suit and called CPS claiming neglect. My union represented me (and the teacher's union represented the teacher involved) and the case was quickly dismissed. My union dues paid for my representation.
My union also was created due to the lack of paid sick leave, lack of medical benefits for non-teaching employees. We didn't have those pre-union.

Sounds like you have worked at EA Conway Hospital also.

Been a teacher 11 years. Have never joined a teachers union. I don’t do shady stuff so don’t really need union protection

I was in a petrochemical union years ago. We had a clause in our contract that said the company had to pay a contract craftsman the same wage as a company/union craftsman. It was designed to protect our jobs and wages.
One year we were in contract negotiations and a strike was imminent. A contract craftsman tells me the union is stupid and we are fools for going out on strike because we have such a great job. We eventually did go out on strike. When we settled the contract, one of the things we had to give up was the reciprocal wage agreement. Immediately afterwards, we got our raise and the company cut non-union wages in half for #1 craftsmen. Helpers were probably making a third of their wage prior to the strike. One day I ran into that same contractor as he was whining to another craftsman about the pay cut. When he saw me he STFU in a hurry.
Unions do some shitty things, like protecting a slacker's job. But in all my years in the union, not once did the company acknowledge any wrong doing. It was their policy to stone wall any and all grievances brought forth by the union. I think for that reason the union adopted the attitude of, you play hard ball, so we will play hardball. Simple as that. Good or bad, you let all unions disappear and many employers will take advantage of the worker's lack of clout.

I was a teacher for my first couple of years out of college (yes it was TFA) and was in the union. I hated the politics (they backed Democrats 100%) but there was a lot of benefits for the small amount of dues I paid, the biggest was legal protection. It came in handy once when this Karen wanted me fired for failing Braxton.
