When will referees start being held accountable for game altering calls

In all major sports, referees face minimal discipline, if any for calls that change the outcome of the game. If I frick up at my job, I face disciplinary action. Refs can frick up and not have to worry about a thing. In my opinion, this is crucial to getting better officiating

Honestly, likely never.
Best chance IMO? If the league ever gets convinced that parity is a winning formula and Stern’s obsession with star power is no longer the key to maximizing growth.
As is that philosophy still rules and the fallout is all the nonsense superstar and glamour market preferential treatment we see.
The league would have to actively put an emphasis on parity in officiating and hold official accountable. They don’t want to do that and haven’t.

Had to look twice! Thought I was on the Saints Board when I opened the topic line!

If you can get the few “rebel owners”, the league head and the mob to agree, it’s all downhill cakewalk after that.

Being a referee should be one of those jobs in which malfeasance while on duty could result in criminal charges.
Everyone makes mistakes. I’m not talking about mistakes. I’m talking 2018 NFC Championship game type corruption.
Implement a rule allowing for video review for any game-deciding play in all major sports. If everyone sees the same thing and the ref still doesn’t call it correctly after having ample opportunity to review, he should be suspended immediately and face possible prosecution.
Incompetent, corrupt and/or legally blind people shouldn’t be officiating major sporting events.
To be clear, I only want criminal penalties for the corrupt. I’d just like to see the blind and incompetent removed from officiating.

Corrupting the results absolutely does open up a ref to criminal charges.

I'm not knighting for refs or saying every missed call is excusable but we do have the benefit of replay at our side while refs have to make these calls in real time and not always with the best angle at their disposal. If you're going to get rid of refs when they make bad calls, you're literally going to end up having no refs to officiate the sport at some point.

What do you propose? Games are reviewed and refs are graded. It affects their assignments and advancement. It’s not like we can put them in jail or subject them to the lash( although there have been times when I
wished for it) As long as humans officiate games, mistakes will happen. I can be as frustrated and angry as anyone. Sometimes it really hurts. I’ve known guys who reff’d games from high school through college and had their sights set in the pros. It’s a very tough, pressure- filled job. Basketball can be tough for the fans and officials because it’s so out in the open and moving fast. And it sometimes seems the refs are arrogant and dismissive and almost try to antagonize coaches and players. For example, they’ll turn their back a cross their arms and shake their heads after a close call. But the idea is to shut down debate on the court during a game. I don’t think there are any easy solutions. People are flawed and shite happens,
