I'm a reasonably smart guy, but I am not sure I ever figured the Dewey Decimal System out, although it's been a long time since I have been in a library, like most of you Baws. Good riddance.

Bye Bye DDS

I’m not a librarian but hardly see what is difficult to understand about the DDS.

Your being unreasonably smart if you understand the DDS.

Yes there are flaws with the Dewey Decimal System, especially when subjects like computer science really weren't around when Dewey created his system and is why materials are found in the 000s (General) rather than in 600s (Technology). Designing a new system around words will probably be easy for an individual library system but won't work for all libraries.

Also, this opens the Gwinnett Library System to having to constantly reevaluate and redo their classification system much more frequently when "words" change or are created. I wish them the best of luck with their endeavor, and that it better serves their users than the DDC.

Main complaints are:

It's old and newer subjects need to be shoehorned into the defined set of rules.

It's a closed system (only so many subject headings and sub headings because of numbers).

More people immediately understand a bookstore model of easy-to-identify word-based subject headings.

It's attached to Dewey, who was not inclusive and had a scandalous history with women.

The DDC is not hard to understand if you have access to the classification breakdown

I didn't read the article but if this is true its sad. Up until high school I used the library for school work or just to check out a fun book once in a while. It had been almost 20 years since I went back to the library and its wasn't that hard to remember how to use the system.... was easy actually. Hell I even taught my kid how to use it in a matter of a minute probably.
