I've come across a few podcast that seemed interesting, but then when I start listening I couldn't handle it for more than a half of min.
Is there certain factors in a room you do it in play a factor in the sound? Obviously you don't want to do it somewhere where it echos..

Yes, background noise is a huge factor that people ofttimes don't consider. Things such as cars passing by, pets, etc. If you get a mic stand you can get an acoustic screen to help with low level background noise. Another option is to put up a blanket over a window that faces a street essentially creating a 2nd wall.
