Hey y'all, Happy New Year.

First things first, I got a couple new knives for cleaning fish and the wife said she learned what to buy from reading this board. Thank y'all, the knives are awesome and have really saved me some time.

Backstory here is I've become a monster at catching reds in the kayak, my new goal is specs and I am just failing. I've fished Lake Hermitage, Myrtle Grove, Hopedale Lagoon, Geoghegan Canal and can only find one or two at a time. The only time I've had luck with specs was in Mangrove Bay on a bay boat but I don't have access to that anymore plus kayaking is more fun to me.

So my question is first, is it safe to launch out of Bait Inc. or somewhere and go across the Chalmette wall in a kayak? I hear if the tide is strong I won't be able to make it through the Bayou Beinvenue locks.

Second question is, is there anywhere to catch specs that's not the Hopedale rock dam from a Kayak?

I wouldn't do it for that very reason.

Slidell bridges (Hwy 11, train trestles). Just watch the winds to catch the lake on a calm day. Or if you're willing to drive a little farther, PAC

My opinion is that you will never be able to overcome the tide flowing through the locks. You could possibly portage over the levee but I don’t know if you can climb over the concrete wall. I fished there yesterday on a falling tide and I couldn’t get through the lock with less than half throttle in my bay boat. I have caught trout on the backside of the “Great Wall” so there is that option. Then you would only need to walk over the levee at the first lock on bayou bienvenue.

did it once in my yak. Almost didn't make it back and tide was very slow. Just drive to Shell beach and fish the MRGO rocks down there. We usually catch more on the rocks than the actual wall anyway.

The Wall was slow last week too much pressure and really not a safe place for a yak. There's some bozos out there that might run you over especially on weekends. I've never fished the inside Wall but that could be good.

Have you tried the bayou just to the right as you enter the spoil canal across from Hopedale Marina? It holds specks this time of year. I don't normally go in there and leave it for the yaks and flat boats.

Just before the spoil canal going north up LaLoutre across the road also held specks last year at this time. Call the marina and ask for the owner Pat, he's a straight shooter and will tell you if specks are close by or not.

When we pickup waiting for the truck I idle across from the launch near the shore where the poles are and on my sonar it's full of bait. Might be specks too I'd try from there down to MRGO.
