Interesting encounter with a spike this morning

We have a creek crossing with a bridge that goes to a CRP field. I parked the SxS on the bridge and it’s a steep uphill grade to the CRP field I’m hunting. I get to the top and there is a deer about 50 yards away. I have a dim light but can see the spikes. My first thought was “damn that new SxS is quiet. Didn’t even spook him”. Then I notice he isn’t even paying attention to my light. He sniffs around in the area pacing back and forth and I realize he probably lost a doe he was trailing. Rain gets heavier and I decide to keep walking and spook him off. This deer dgaf! At one point he gets within 25-30 yards from me. I used my mouth to try and bleat and see if he’ll come to me but it kinda spooked him and he jumped. Anyway, I walked across this field with this spike 30 yards away on my right all the way to my stand. I climbed up, opened the windows to settle in and shined my light out and he is still there sniffing around.
Anyway, just thought I’d share some excitement and a story on how dumb young love struck deer can be. This was the best pic I could get with that cheap light.

I love close encounters with deer when hunting. When you have a doe or another deer you don't want to shoot and you try to get as close as possible. Its really a great feeling when bow hunting to be able to get really close to deer. (before gun season begins).
Now, I'm too old for that kind of stalking, wish I would have done more earlier in life. They can look straight at you and if you are really still, not be able to figure out what you are. Great times.

Wickowick and I sat 40 yards from a monster 8 point in Texas because he was hung up on a hot doe. They sure get dumb.
Right down the state line from you yesterday, my shorthairs were running in the woods and jumped a doe. She crossed the road in front of me tail up, buck behind her had nose down with 1 thing on his mind.

That's a black panther not a deer!
You caught the legendary Louisiana black panther on camera!
Young bucks are gonna young buck whether deer or human. I've known people who won't stop chasing tail no matter what.

If you ever had the thought run through your head as to why there are so many spikes killed by young hunters and meat hunters, it's because they are ridicuously stupid. Spikes are the dumbest deer in the woods and will do things against their best instincts 9 times out of 10. It's my theory that surviving spikes are the ones that turn into big 6 pts or small 8 pts at 2.5yo that frequent feeders and come out in the daylight before the rut kicks off; the deer that most south La folk love to put on the ground and take pictures with.

1.5yo bucks are pretty dumb regardless of what’s sticking out of their head. Throw in the smell of a doe and they get really dumb

Last yr I had an small 8pt walk in the middle of Hwy 40 in Folsom and just stop in middle of the road by town hall. He looked like he was sleeping standing up. I had to drive my car right up to him and lay on the horn for him to flinch. He kinda woke up and just stumbled off. I guess he was worn down from chasing or was just hit but he was almost in the middle of town under street lights and cars arent driving that fast there. Or maybe CWD
