I get what you are saying, but having been in the military, I learned that people will “respect the rank,” or in this case the number (be it 7 or 18).
Not only that, but picking up rank/the coveted number brings out even more leadership in individuals. Case in point: who is to say that had Chaisson not been awarded that #18–would he have felt obligated/warranted to call that impromptu defensive meeting in the peach bowl after the 2nd (maybe 3rd?) OU TD—we’ll never know.
And That’s not even touching on how bad-arse Cush was anchoring the Oline this year. (Oh, and #7 won the Thorpe Award.)
