This is not a new idea. It was floated back when Edwin was governor.

So was a by-pass. Let's see which one gets built first.

These types of dry reservoirs have been successfully done elsewhere. For example, Dayton has used them for a century. They create a good amount of green-space as well as flood protection.

If they do it right, it would help.

(Oh well, there goes that.)

Why should my land be taken to keep your land from flooding? This wasn't a problem until the Federal Flood Insurance Program started subsidizing irresponsible development in floodplains.

Sherwood Forest was not in a flood plain when it was built. The flood plain map was changed after Katrina.

In all seriousness, he’s probably not wrong. That money would be better spent dredging the Amite and Comite Rivers deeper and clearing out debris near French Settlement. Also, many smaller bayous and rivers which empty into the Amite need to be dredged also. We are overthinking all of this flood control/management.

Agreed.

The Amite has a flood basin in the form of hundreds of gravel pits south of hwy 10 that weren't there 20 years ago. It drains better than it ever has. It used to get out the banks once or twice a year. It hasn't done that in my area, in over 15 years, even during the 2016 flood.

What politicians are pushing this and who owns most of the land ?

Bingo. Certain politicians tried for years and years to do this in Washington Parish and it finally got shut down.

Yup all fine and good until EE and his cronies got a hold of it.

This idea was part of a solution concocted by the USACE after the 2-3 consecutive years of riverine flooding in the Amite river watershed around 1980. I say part because the recommendation also included cutting the Comite river diversion canal. This seemed to be the best idea, to divert the Comite into the mississippi and hold the Amite north of LP, AP, EBRP, etc. This would reduce the volume of water passing through in the Amite between LP and EBR and through AP into maurepas and ponchartrain.

Dredging isnt the best thing to do, but I think it's necessary at this point mostly because of the silting that resulted from the 16 flood. Basically all of the rivers, canals, etc are like 3-5+ feet "shallower" than they were before the flood. This causes flooding in low lying areas with less rainfall than before because the rives/creeks/bayous/canals are already closer to the tops of their banks.

I think they ought to take a look at making a better plan before spending this kind of money on this kind of project. This idea is 30 years old. We have way more data and technology to design a better resiliency plan.

I believe the flooding is caused by the highways and interstates preventing water from draining naturally.

If this is the case, how did everything flood South of I-12?????

Well, probably bc we had a flood of biblical proportions.

The flooding was much worse north of I-12. You can clearly see I-12 acting as a levee from aerial footage during the flood.

ETA: my home is about 500 yards from the Comite. It should have flooded during the 2016 flood, but didn’t bc Plank road acted as levee and diverted the water. My neighbors across the highway weren’t as lucky.
