Cost has to be the leading cause, imo.
Golf has no more etiquette, rules, unspoken rules, or lingo than any other sport either to watch or participate in.
Think about the phrases guys throw out watching a baseball game and how awkward it would be if you knew none of them. Hunting and fishing would be the same for participation. The rules for when and how to hunt, what to buy, how to act.
