Obtuse's guide to entry level Swiss watches under $2000

This is a great time of year to buy an entry-level Swiss watch since the online discounters are cutting prices to the bone. I have assembled a list of Swiss brands that I would recommend. I have included a watch or three from each brand that I like but use this more as a list of brands than particular watch recommendations. Most of these brands have a wide variety of watches in the price range and I have worn so many watches I often lean toward the avant-garde (though I tried to curtail that) with less expensive watches because I view them as fun. The large discounters like Jomashop will have a large variety of these brands in stock.
Swiss Made has a legal meaning and if anyone is interested I will discuss what exactly that means and what you should expect to get at these price points from individual brands. All of them, however, offer solid value for a Swiss watch at the given price points. I note the street price you should expect to pay this time of year.
All the watches I have listed are mechanical and almost all of them are automatics.
I did not include any micro-brands nor any Japanese watches both of which can be excellent as well. Most of the threads here ask about Swiss watches so...
I will shut up now since I spent too long making the list but will be happy to answer questions later.
I hope at least one person finds some inspiration in the thread.
Note I have included two German brands.

Thanks for the effort obtuse. Why do you like Oris so much?

They are probably my favorite watch brand in the price range partly because they have been able to stay independent and primarily family-owned for their entire history. That is a rather large accomplishment in the segment, much easier to do when you are Patek or Rolex. I also really enjoy the styling of a lot of their watches, they offer a wide range of looks for such an inexpensive brand. They also offer in-house movements, just not in this price range.

Bell & Ross are nice watches. I tried one on once but ended up with a Sinn 856s which is not for this discussion. Had I seen that Bell& Ross though Sinn may have been out of the discussion.

The irony is not lost on me that I routinely use an iPhone to accurately set watches that cost many multiples of a phone.
Watches are also the last bastion of socially acceptable man jewelry and there are still some of us that appreciate a wristwatch even if it is an anachronism. A good watch will outlive any human if cared for, a phone will be tossed out before the watch needs its first service.

That’s a great list. Good work and thank you.

I’d nominate Marathon as well. A bit bulky but I dig them and their support is great.

I like Sinns very much, a U1 was the first German watch I owned.

The only Sinn I own currently is a very un-Sinn 6100 Regulator

Sinn and Fortis are two more Germans worth a look in the price range.

The only time I set my eco-drive is daylight savings time. It's been the best watch under $500 I've ever owned.
For some people it's not always convenient or possible to pull out your cell phone to check the time.

They make excellent watches in the price range. The tritium tubes are quite handy for many people.

GSAR ~950 at 41mm x 14mm thick they really aren't that bulky in the modern view and perfectly fine for a tool watch

I got myself an Oris BC3 for Christmas. My new everyday watch.

. I’m actually in the market for one, but I usually just say frick it because I don’t know if I’m getting ripped off at this range. Thanks for doing the leg work.

just bought a date just 41 and haven't broken the news to the wife yet so I will have to wait until the dust settles before I buy another one. I do like that FREDERIQUE CONSTANT. I may pick that up next year.

Among other watches, I own a Certina, Tissot, and Victorinox. Love them all.

The Slimline with the power reserve is actually a manufacture (in-house) movement. It comes in 4 colorways. Full disclosure while FC is made in Switzerland it is now owned by Citizen.
This is the blue version.

Who are you, so wise in the ways of watches?
Posted on 12/4/19 at 6:20 am to Obtuse1
I like their perpetual calendar model. It sort of looks like a less expensive version of the Breitling Transocean 1461

I just purchased a Hamilton Khaki Field in 42mm with the bracelet last week and I should receive it any day now. It will be my first automatic watch
