also, when watching them work, ask them to run a retrieve that you set up. dog can have run the same thing 100x and look amazing. throw them a completely new set up and they fail miserably. generally if you work with a reputable trainer you should be ok.

when I ran a corp lodge.. customers would sometimes ask to use "their Dogs" I would say If the dog is steady ok...... about 15 dogs..... tried.. only 1 was "steady"..... double mark with a dead fall about 75 yards out.... live flopping and quacking fall with a big splash slightly out of sight at fall....... only one.. was "steady" the second one was a wipeout mark as well. the dogs with controlled breaks never got the first mark.
