Jrue's Future

Been talking to a few people about Jrue & his future beyond this current contract and wanted to start a discussion on the board.
For those that don't know, he's got 3 years left on his deal, with a player option in the final year. He just turned 29 and is coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
More than likely, he will opt out in 2021 and seek a bigger contract for multiple years at the age of 31. Likely his last big contract. At that time, we will have already given BI somewhere close to the max (28-34) and almost assuredly be looking give Zion the max in 2022 (we also have to talk about Lonzo, Hayes, & NAW but we will table that for now).
We likely won't have the money to give Jrue the contract he wants/deserves. Of course, I'd love to pay him under $20 mil for him to be our "Iggy," but I doubt that happens.
So our options are as follows
1) trade him. the question is when?
2) give him a max 2 yr extension that lines up for when you have to max Zion. but he has to agree & you will lose him for nothing
3) say screw it and give him the money he wants because you believe Griff's claim that Jrue is one of the best guards in the league. what player(s) is/are a causality due to this decision?
4) none of the above = _____________?

all of that depends on how the team progresses...ie: all options are available. guessing now doesnt make much sense

im always interested in your opinion cgrand
question I have is how does this team progress where Jrue gets an extension?

Future is in the future.
So much depends on zion and the next haul of first rounders.
If jrue, zion, hayes, naw, ingram et al get to conf finals td-gm will look at it differently compared to out in first round v the mighty dallas serbian.
Lets decide later.

With Favors and Redick on the same timeline as Holiday, I’d bet that they’ll plan to let him play through 20/21 season barring a disaster of a season. I don’t see them trading Holiday because he fits the timeline for NAW to develop.

Favors has 1 year left. Redick has 2.
The question isn't about trading Holiday because you want to. It's about being proactive so that you don't lose him for nothing when he looks for a bigger contract and you cannot give him the money he wants.

Disagree. You want those quality vets as mentors while your guys develop. Year 3 is when you want them to ideally take over. Sometimes building the culture is more important than getting more assets. This team already have plenty of picks. You want to avoid being the Kings and Wolves of the world.

i wansnt trying to be a dick, sorry it i was.
looking ahead:
SG: didi louzada
SF: ingram
PF: zion
C: hayes
PG: NAW
thats your core. in two years the best case scenario is that they dont need holiday any longer, IMO

seems like you believe that having Jrue another year without a return benefits the team more than trading him a year early for assets
I respect that perspective but if we are talking about Jrue being here for 1 season vs 2 seasons, I'd hardly call that going down the King's road. Just my opinion. I do agree that every team needs quality vets

A lot of the folks that were screaming to trade Jrue when he started poorly kept saying he doesn't fit with our timeline. But he does for reasons you just stated. At the least, his contract lines up perfectly with the young guys rounding into form right when his deal is up.

well then we need to define what we mean by Jrue "fitting our timeline." Does that mean he fits because re-ups with the team or that he's fits because he is going to help build culture & pass the torch?

not at all man!
and I totally agree with you. great young core that won't need Jrue. of course I'd love to keep him as a mentor but I doubt the money is there when you have to pay Zion, Ingram, Hayes, NAW, & Didi

you don't let a vet of jrue's caliber walk without any trade return on a team that isn't competiting for anything of note yet.

i actually think (if most/all goes well) that it will be a pretty smooth transition. jrue got his max deal here, there should not be any animosity or hurt feelings there at all.
louzada will need next year and the year after to even get up to speed. so will hayes. in the meantime there will be ample opportunity for holiday to ball out, be happy, make big dollars and have fun. honestly i cant think of many players who are in a better basketball and quality of life situation than he is.
to directly answer the question...the current deal is the last max-ish deal holiday will have with the pels. he will be allowed to make his own decision from there

Seems like in specific order our big three Will be Zion, BI and Hayes. Hayes will be good because he will be somewhat like Capella and not really get a whole lot drawn up for him. Just rim run and put back buckets which is perfect when you have two elite offensive players like I think we will have. Some people have already written off Ball which is pretty ignorant 12 games into a whole new team. (That isnt even healthy yet). People talk about his shot so much and my main concern with him is hes not a elite athlete and finisher. Nither is Rubio and hes effective so I dont know.

but the ideal scenario is that NAW supplants ball. i feel like its self-evident when they made the trade that a commitment would be made to one of the two lakers but not both
they took NAW at 17...go have a look at the all the players they COULD have taken. if NAW doesnt take ball's spot they've made a major team building error

I dont think NBA teams go into drafts with Starting lineups or even game finishing lineups in their mind. Ainge basically took Brown, signed Hayward and then drafted Tatum. Basically all wings. I think they liked the talent and person NAW was and said this guy is a steal at 17 lets take him. The player that most resembles NAW to me in NBA is Brogdan who was his best as a 6th man/ fill in starter.

We can speculate, but who knows where any of our players will be, including Jrue, in 3 seasons. So I have no clue if that means we extend him a max in 3 seasons, a smaller contract, let him walk, or trade him down the road.

We don't know where we'll be during the final year of his deal.
A couple of seasons from now, BI could be KD like, Zion could be the next all time great, and we could have really used that 17/8 piece in Jrue that we traded away for a draft pick that isn't helping the team that is contending for the West.

Curious as to why you for sure have Didi and NAW in there, yet left out Frank Jackson
Frank and NAW are the same age, yet different play styles, they can stay together on this team. Personally I think Frank has more upside than Didi, and maybe even NAW. Also I know the board doesn’t like Lonzo, but if he doesnt care about starting, he would be a great backup PG, which could still be a part of a “core”
