My paw paw was a Navy Seabee at Guadalcanal in 1942. He ended up getting malaria but survived that. He passed about 10 years ago. Great man and great American.

Actually Midway was when the Japs lost the initiative, but Guadalcanal bought us time and proved that we could beat the Japanese army in the jungles.
Agreed. I was actually referencing the ground campaign when we started taking back territory that Japan had occupied before the war.

Ironbottom sound is a solemn place for american and japanese sailors.
Lots of men died there.

Sadly, the USS Atlanta was destroyed by friendly fire. Another cruiser blasted it with its main batteries in the night action.

Grandfather was in the 1st as well and brought my grandmother back from New Zealand. The book "Neptune's Inferno" chronicles the Battle of Guadalcanal mostly from the Navy's perspective both from the United States and Japan.

Thanks man. I got the honor of meeting many of those vets. He would take me to all his reunions. Greatest generation.

One or two thoughts in general. It wasn't mentioned but Lee was absolutely the right man to be in charge of gunnery. Before Mark Spitz won 7 Olympic gold medals the record was 5 by Lee - all in shooting. He then specialized in gunnery in the Navy. He viewed the 16 in guns on a battleship as part of a "gunfight" with other ships.
Also as SEC related I should mention that Shug Jordan was a combat engineer- he invaded Sicily, North Africa, Normandy and Okinawa. Not much else to say about that

I was hoping that one of them in the picture was my grandfather. He had a lot of mementos from the war in his collection but nearly all of it was lost during a house fire. Absolute shame. Greatest generation indeed.

Looks like already has some rank on him. He looks like he is having a good time. The calm before the storm.
Glad he made it home.

Also shot three snipers during the Veracruz campaign.
Bad arse all around.

He must have volunteered for the Pacific. With that much time in theater he would have been eligible to go home.

My grandfather was on the San Francisco heavy cruiser at Guadalcanal. Pearl through the Leyte Gulf. I was about 12 or so when he died but he never talked about it to me. I think he was a corpsman so he probably saw the worst the war had to offer.

I have to ask, why did you leave that shite when you knew what was coming?

It was all locked up in my Grandmother's house and she evacuated with my dad the day before. I was busy at work evacuating 95 plus oil platforms.
