I started using LP smart side instead of Hardie a few years ago. It holds up better and I wouldn’t ever recommend hardie over it. Your installer will thank you too. LP is much more sturdy and doesn’t show waves on long runs.
Whats the price difference?

It’s pretty much a wash price wise. The longest you can get Hardie is twelve feet. LP comes in sixteen foot sticks. With using the LP in sixteen you’ll have less butt joints which always looks better. In a lot of cases you’ll have some walls that with Hardie you will have butt joints but with LP you wouldn’t. Everything that Hardie makes you can get in LP. Also, in my experience Hardie after a few years becomes brittle and it’s very hard to repair. Words can’t express how much easier it is to work with either. I swear I’m not a rep just sharing my experience having used both extensively.
I missed the 37k quote lol. If that includes soffit jump on that it if they do good work. Labor wise that house is a nightmare. To me that seems like the material doubled which is the standard on a job like that. Plus having to take the vinyl down and disposing.

You do not caulk the over lap
Exactly right. This doesn’t matter if it’s Hardie or wood. People don’t understand that water can and will get behind siding, and if they caulk the laps, it has no way to escape. The old school painter who recommends this is doing a world of harm.
As to the OP and pricing, I just tore off the cypress lap siding on my old, 1900 SF balloon framed house, insulated from the outside, decked, installed new doors and windows- with redundant flashing- house wrapped, and sided with Hardie lap siding (I used Azek for my corners and window trim, which I prefer over the Hardie Trim). It cost me about $20K all in, but I did the work myself.

Any pictures of your trim work? I agree 100% not using hardie for trim. PITA for sure to work with.

These were already on my phone and before painting was finished, but you get the idea. The only wood is the front door, shutters and the brackets (I rehabbed 3 and had to build one to match from some old cypress I had). Door and window sills/surrounds, planter boxers, all the trim details overhead (other than the Hardie bead board) are Azek/Versatex. I did use Hardie facia and soffit material. One note about the cellular pvc is that you have to paint it a color with a high LRV, i.e. a light color.
If you want to see anything else, let me know.

Looks good.
Got some paint sprayed on the guest house. Still have two more sides. Had to shut it down due to the dam lady bugs started swarming. Will finish tomorrow and the trim painting.
Have to say that spraying Hardie board did fine.

Looks good! Spraying is definitely the way to go if you can.

Yep, finished the rest yesterday. It takes more time to tape out everything then to paint.

fish, is your house in a very tight turn? neighbor's have red pots in their yard? trying not to be too specific in case I'm right...

About a 1/4 mile from the turn.

hardy is super easy. the hardest part is staying level. make sure you got a few helpers. then let the nail gun do the work
