This isn't actually a bad thing, since those models were actually pretty good. The controversy is that Gamefreak lied and said that they had to create new models, their reasoning for 60%~ of the dex being cut. Though there is some major scaling issues this time around. Pokemon that should be giant are the same height as a 10 year old.
If they didn't make new models, why is the rest of the game so sucky? Eurogamer brought to light a great point. There are zero dungeons in this game. Remember how fun the Silp Co. dungeon was in Red & Blue? The Rocket Hideout and the burned tower/whirl islands in G/S? The many dungeons in R/S and D/P? Gone. Nothing like that in these games. Just linear routes and a half baked open world section.
