Yes, but you can plug a USB drive to the base station for local recordings. It will still record to the cloud which may not be what OP wants. Personally, it's the best of both worlds b/c if you have a fire or the dvr is stolen, the local DVR doesn't really help. Cloud has disadvantages, but having both is ideal for security. With all that said... I am no fan of battery-operated cameras unless you have no other option.

Wireless cameras are not ideal for security.

If security is what you want get a wired system on its own network.

It's just for around the house but using the Arlo record to USB function might be worth exploring...

Arlo apparently has a FlexPower model now that can be integrated with ONVIF compliant VMS (ZoneMinder) so I'm going to investigate that some more too.
