Yildiz 20G Over/Under. My 11yr old has the youth model and its a great gun for the money. His first trip out with it he killed a big Tom @ 35 yards. I am 6' and I could shoot it if I needed to.

If this ain’t the truth. I’m constantly battling this with my 870 and rarely take it out anymore for this reason.

To OP: maybe take a look at stoeger m3000. Pretty sure those are in the price range you’re looking for

I bought my 13 year old son a tristar 20 guage from Walmart for less than $300 before squirrel season this year. He absolutely loves it. Normally we squirrel hunt until deer season, then the shotguns go up, but he was so addicted to shooting it, he went 10 more times during deer season.

I bought a weatherby 20 SA for my daughter 5 yrs ago she doesnt shoot much but its been a great gun no issues - only drawback is to shoot high brass vs low brass there is a bushing to change out.
If its gonna be a gun that last 10+ yrs probably spend a little more and go w/ a Franchi/Stoeger SA - great guns for the price. Next step up IMO would be a Berretta A300. Another option would be a used gun beretta 391 or benelli 20 ga. I have shot a beretta 391 for 15+ yrs and no plans on changing
