There are all sorts of interesting moments during the War

Abbeville has the unique distinction of being both the birthplace and the deathbed of the Confederacy. On November 22, 1860, a meeting was held at Abbeville, at a site since dubbed "Secession Hill", to launch South Carolina's secession from the Union;[8][9] one month later, the state of South Carolina became the first state to secede.

At the end of the Civil War, with the Confederacy in shambles, Confederate President Jefferson Davis fled Richmond, Virginia, and headed south, stopping for a night in Abbeville at the home of his friend Armistead Burt. It was on May 2, 1865, in the front parlor of what is now known as the Burt-Stark Mansion that Jefferson Davis officially acknowledged the dissolution of the Confederate government, in the last official cabinet meeting.[8][9]

Very short sighted decision. Think of how different this continent would be. I want to cry every time I imagine the possibilities.

With the issue of nullification and the emphasis upon states rights, SC under the direction of Calhoun and his minions, was determined to push towards secession. Slavery was just gas on that fire.

Looks like you've been lied too, Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. Don't believe that Yankee propaganda.

Danville. VA and Greensboro, NC also claim that distinction. Danville was the last functional capital and Greensboro is where the CSA cabinet broke up and headed in different directions.

“I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” -Abraham Lincoln, inauguration address.

Lincoln also promised to enforce the Fugitive Slave act, which would return escaped slaves back to their state or territory. Why would the south secede if Lincoln wasn't going to abolish slavery?

All of the newspapers in the South, North, and Europe at the time called it a tariff war. Like many historical events. The Civil War was completely misunderstood, and the history has been rewritten in favor of the winners, while the losers get called traitors.

I don't remember who it was, but as some Southern politician said: "If we're not fighting for the damn ******s, I'd like to know what the hell we ARE fighting for."
